사이의 시공간

시간과 시간 사이,

공간과 공간 사이,

존재는 그 사이에서 드러난다.

지상 가장 낮은 풍경을 이루는 풀은

스러지는 순간 더욱 선명해진다.

그 생명들이 겹겹이 쌓이며

시간을 만든다.

비단 위에 머문 흔적들,

나무판 위에 새겨진 자국들이

밀도를 이루어,

그 생명들로 풀숲이 되고

계절을 이룬다.

삶은 죽음을 드러내고,

죽음으로 삶이 드러난다.

그 사이, 경계에서

삶과 죽음이 엉기며

찬란한 풀숲을 만들어낸다.

The Space-Time Between

​

Between time and time,
Between space and space,
Existence reveals itself in these gaps.

​

The grass, forming the lowest landscape on Earth,
Becomes more vivid in its moment of fading.
As these lives pile upon each other,
They create time.

​

The traces left upon silk,
The imprints carved into wood,
Form a density,
Becoming a meadow of life,
And shaping the seasons.

​

Life reveals death,
And death reveals life.
In between, at the boundary,
Life and death intertwine,
Creating a brilliant meadow.

​성민우 Min Woo Sung

작가 성민우(b.1974)는 홍익대학교 미술대학 동양화과 및 동대학원 졸업하였다. 이후 한국교원대학교에서 미술교육학 박사를 취득하였다. 성민우의 작품 세계 중심에는 오이코스(Oikos)가 있다. 이 오이코스는 인간의 사적 영역, 즉 집을 뜻하는 고대 그리스어로 환경과 생태의 어원이 되는 용어이다.

자연에서 본 다양한 색 위에 동양화 채색과 금분, 은분을 사용하여 식물의 미세한 구조, 혹은 이 세상에 존재하는 모든 식물의 생태를 추적하듯 더 이상 그릴 것이 없는 상태까지 파고들며 화면을 메워 나간다. 그리고 생명의 절대적인 존재에 대한 물음을 풀어나가듯 화면 중앙, 혹은 전체를 점유하며 가득 채우고 있다. 이 세상에 존재하는 모든 풀은 모두 고귀하고 생명을 간직한 존재라는 것을 인지하고 생명의 근원을 쫓는 회화론을 펼치고 있다.

모든 생명은 존재의 의미가 있다. 이름 없는 풀들도 생의 시작부터 마감까지 살아온 시간과 공간 또한 이 세상의 한 부분이다. 그리고 모든 존재가 자연의 섭리에 따라 서로 교감하고 반응하며 인고의 시간을 보낸 것은 식물의 유한성에 대한 생태적인 관점이며 생성과 소멸을 뛰어넘는 생명의 진리이자 영원한 시간을 간직한 예술의 존재이다.

자연의 생성과 소멸은 생명의 유한성에 의한 순화구조, 즉 인간의 윤회적 삶과 닮아있다. 그리고 금빛, 은빛을 사용함으로써 시간을 봉인하고 영원한 공간을 획득하는 예술의 회화론과 연결하고 있다. 결국 이 세상의 모든 존재를 자신의 시공간에 천착하는 예술을 통해 생명과 자연의 섭리, 자신의 삶을 포함한 모든 존재를 하나로 묶고 모두 귀결하고 있다. (대전시립미술관 작가소개)

Sung Minwoo graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hongik University and its Graduate School. Later, she earned a Ph.D. in Art Education from Korea National University of Education. At the heart of Sung Minwoo’s artistic world is the concept of Oikos. This ancient Greek word, meaning "home," is the root of terms related to environment and ecology.

Using traditional East Asian painting techniques, as well as gold and silver powder, Sung explores the intricate structures of plants or, more broadly, the ecology of all plant life. She fills the canvas, delving deeper until there is nothing more to depict, as if tracking the very essence of life. Her works focus on life’s absolute existence, filling the center of the canvas or even the entire space. Sung's paintings convey the belief that all plants in this world are noble beings that possess life, and she unfolds a theory of painting that traces the origin of life itself.

All living beings have meaning in their existence. Even nameless grasses, from the beginning of their lives to their end, are part of this world’s time and space. Through an ecological perspective on the finitude of plants, Sung emphasizes how all beings respond to and interact with the natural order, enduring time in a way that transcends birth and death. This reflects the truth of life, which holds eternal time and exists as art beyond the cycle of creation and destruction.

The creation and dissolution in nature mirror the cyclical structure of human life, resembling the idea of reincarnation. By using gold and silver, Sung seals time and connects her art to the notion of painting as a way to acquire eternal space. Ultimately, through art that immerses itself in the artist’s own space-time, she binds all living beings, nature’s laws, and her own life into one unified whole, culminating in a singular conclusion.
